Description: Our Spring concert is all about beginnings, Come and listen to Schubert, Beethoven and Rossini. Doors poen at 7 and the concert will start at 7:30 under the careful baton of Felicity Cliffe.

    A bit about the pieces:

Rossini - The barber of seville
The opera follows the story of Count Almaviva who arrives, disguised as a poor student called Lindoro, at the house of Doctor Bartolo to serenade Rosina, Bartolo’s ward who is kept confined to the house so that one day he may marry her and take advantage of her fortune. In order to woo Rosina, the Count enlists the help of Figaro the local barber (a character we meet in an opera by a certain W.A. Mozart 30 years earlier), who knows all the town’s secrets and scandals. He devises a plan, for a generous fee: the count will disguise himself as a drunken soldier with orders to be
quartered at Bartolo’s house so that he may gain access to Rosina.

    Schubert Symphony No. 8 ‘Unfinished’
The two movements of Schubert’s that we actually have were premiered in 1865 and were immediately popular and the piece is still frequently performed today thanks to its catchy tunes. The symphony is sometimes referred to as the first romantic symphony as it is driven by lyrical melodies and novel orchestration whilst also boasting a classical form.

    Beethoven Symphony No. 6 ‘Pastoral’
The 6th Symphony is one of the few pieces by Beethoven that could be considered to be ‘programme music’, music that evokes specific images or stories. Beethoven was a real nature lover and the symphony is inspired by his many walks in the country. He is reported to have said that the symphony is ‘more the expression of feeling than painting, making reference to the symphony’s more organic development as opposed to literal picture-painting.
